[edit] History

As CNNMoney.com reports [1], the first plans for the Apple iPhone were thought of around 30 months ago. Through that time, Apple has been in negotiations with a lot of different companies, mainly Cingular, Yahoo! and Google. In the beggining of 2005, Steve Jobs and Cingular's chief executive, Stan Sigman, got together and signed a contract to cooperate their efforts of bringing the iPhone to the market.

Only weeks before the public unveiling at Macworld 2007, Apple showed Cingular the working prototype. Before that, even Apple employees weren't able to see the version everyone else saw during Macworld 2007. They often saw only a mockup, or a standard cellphone.

[edit] Rumours

According to reports, both Cingular CEO Stan Sigman and Apple CEO Steve Jobs have suggested that later versions of the iPhone might use Cinuglar's 3G network for data.

The built-in camera of the first generation iPhone might also be used for video recording. Speculation also exists that Apple's 'screen as camera' patents might lead to technology that uses the screen of later editions of the iPhone for videoconferencing.

With OSX running on the device, a simple application like TextEdit, which can already read Microsoft Windows documents, might appear as a built-in application at launch.

[edit] Trademark dispute

See main article on this topic, trademark dispute.

Right after the public unveiling of the iPhone, Cisco notified the press, that they were in talks with Apple for the last few months, still discussing the trademark issue of the new product the midnight before Macworld 2007. Apple stated, that Cisco's lawsuit on the name of their new product is "funny".

[edit] Availability

The phone is sold exclusively through Apple and Cingular stores, Apple and Cingular's Web sites and Cingular's direct-mail unit. It is not available through indirect retailers. Apple may sell the iPhone through big-box stores like Target and Wal-Mart.

The iPhone was made available to the U.S. on June 29, 2007, to Great Britain and Germany on November 9, 2007, and to France on November 29, 2007. Steve Jobs also announced at Macworld 2007 that the iPhone will be made available to Asia and Canada in 2008.
